Okay – I have good news and I have bad news.
The good news is, there is a gluten free donut shop 5 minutes from my school in Tokyo.
The bad news?
There is a gluten free donut shop 5 minutes from my school in Tokyo.
Did I immediately go there, preparing myself to potentially find a few steps above what amounts to sugary-sweet cardboard, but hoping to find the soft, (I’m gonna say it!) moist, bounce of a perfect chewy donut despite its lack of the oh-so-delicious ingredient of gluten?
I did.
Did I find a cornucopia of the most delicious and abundant donut flavors I could possibly imagine?
I did.
Did I start selecting donuts and placing them on my tray with the provided tongs with reckless abandon, completely absent of any thought of the fact that I have only 4 days to consume whatever I purchase before I leave for an 8 day swimming trip on Friday?
I did.
Does one of the donuts have a piece of bacon on top?
It DOES!
Did I immediately, after leaving said donut shop, monstrously stuff 3 donuts into my gluttonous (but not glutinous), American-sized appetite having, drueling, ill-mannered mouth?
Listen, we don’t need to get into the weeds. I ate some donuts, okay?
Do I feel bad?
Emotionally or psychologically? Nope. Very, very much nope. Quite the contrary. I feel haaaappy.
Do I feel bad physically? Let’s check back in in a few hours.
I AM going to immediately go for a run.
So, how do you say “donuts” in Japanese. I believe it’s pronounced, “Yes, please.”
Actually, you don’t have to speak Japanese very well to say it. It’s ドーナツ. Do you know how to pronounce this?
It’s “Do-o-na-tsu.”
You are just saying the word, “Donuts”, but in a Japanese style. This is one of Japanese’s many “borrowed” words. Sharing is caring and I am so very glad that Japan decided to borrow this one.
Seeing as I have managed to get in maybe 6 swims in the last 2 months in preparation for an 8 day swim trip during which I will have the opportunity (but not the necessity) to swim 3 – 6KM a day starting 4 days from now, do I think that shoving my face with donuts everyday before leaving for said trip is a fantastic idea?
I maybe wouldn’t say fantastic, but it’s a choice! And one I am planning to enthusiastically make. Let’s call it “carb-loading” and move along.
Ooo, I have an idea. Let’s do a sociological experiment (test group 1, control group 0) where we take a person that really likes donuts, but can never eat them because she is stupidly allergic to too many delicious things and then put her within walking distance of a nearly endless supply of donuts that she knows, very soon from now, she will be far away from and possibly never have access to again. How will the human respond?
My hypothesis is – poorly.
I’ll circle back before my Mount Fuji ascent to let you know the test results.
No – let’s skip that. Spoiler alert – I’m gonna eat a lot of donuts.
Hey, a few dozen more donuts down my gullet and I will surely be bikini-ready by Friday.
The best part, the donut shop is having an existential crisis. The name of it is, “I’m donut?”

Yes. Yes you are donut. And for that, I thank you.
Okay off to go for my post-donut run. Gotta get home in time for “dinner”.
